Frequently asked questions

Why is the "Max Resolution" thumbnail sometimes missing?+

YouTube only generates the 1280×720 maxresdefault.jpg for videos uploaded in HD. Older or low-resolution uploads may not have one — in that case it simply won't appear in your results.

Can I use these thumbnails for my own videos?+

You can download a thumbnail for reference, inspiration, or fair-use commentary, but thumbnails are typically copyrighted by their creator. Don't reuse someone else's thumbnail as your own without permission.

Does this work for YouTube Shorts?+

Yes — paste the Shorts URL (youtube.com/shorts/...) and it works the same way.

Does this work on private or unlisted videos?+

No — thumbnail files are only accessible for public videos. Unlisted and private videos don't expose a predictable thumbnail URL.

Can I paste just the video ID instead of a full URL?+
